Video: Layer your Outdoor Furniture from Ordinary to Summer Oasis

I am so excited to be sharing my first video with you! Photos and text are wonderful for conveying ideas, but somehow a stop-motion video is the perfect way to explain how easy it is to go step-by-step through the decorating process.

It is so easy to turn your outdoor lounge area into a warm and welcoming oasis to  hang out with friends and family, or just enjoy some well-deserved peace and quiet all by yourself.

The layering steps you see in the video are the same ones I go through every time we have friends over in the summer. I keep the blankets and pillows inside since they are not weather-resistant, but when I know guests are coming I just set to work, one layer at a time. It takes less than five minutes.

The best thing is that nothing in this post is new. All the blankets, pillows, side tables have been with me for ages. I picked up the old Indian Sari that’s on the couch on a girls trip to Stockholm four years ago. Most of the pillows have been in my living room at one time or another. The big flowery cushion was bought from Anthropologie years ago and was in my living room in our apartment in the city near 5 years ago. I still love it, even though it doesn’t go in my living room anymore. There is one exception to everything being old: the gold tray was bought recently at Ikea.

If I were to create a whole new space, sure I might choose green because I am currently obsessed with this year’s  “in” color. But you don’t always have to have everything “in” and you certainly don’t have to go out and buy new stuff all the time. Turquoise has been a color I have liked for a very long time. It may not be the color of the moment, but it makes me happy. I think this is especially important to remember for areas like your outdoors. For us living in Germany, we only use our outdoor space for the few warm months we have every year, so it really doesn’t make sense to go out and buy new things every summer. I have collected pieces over the years and when I get them out as the temperatures warm up they make me smile. I think this collected looks feels extra welcoming to visitors because it’s a cozy mishmash and not a perfect and stale, straight out of a catalog look.

What do you think of the video? I would love to hear your feedback!

Nicole
